Miechów Upland – hiking through the land of orchids

The Miechów Upland is a unique and interesting place. You can escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city and spend your time in an active and unusual way.

Miechów Land is most closely associated with the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, which is the strong beating heart of Miechów. The edifice was erected in the 14th and 15th centuries and attracts with an interesting shape, rich interiors and the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. At a time when Jerusalem was closed to Christians, it was precisely here that the pilgrims from all over Europe used to come.

 

However, the surroundings of Miechów have another strong asset, namely landscapes and unique nature. In the very area of the municipality of Miechów, there are eight sites of the European Natura 2000 ecological network, where you can find the characteristic xerothermic flower fields. Miechów Upland precious treasury are the orchids flowering amazingly in late spring and in summer. You can find here species such as lady’s-slipper orchid, military orchid or fly orchid. The list of these colourful flowers is long, and exploring and photographing more species can be a great adventure for the whole family. Orchids please the eyes with feast of colours and are extremely beautiful, but let’s don’t forget that these are rare and protected specimens that must not be picked. Every year in Kalina Mała, a Nature 2000 site, the Orchid Festival takes place. It is a good idea to visit it and take advantage of the many attractions that are also available for the youngest guests. Workshops, creative activities and studying the wild vegetation with experts who talk about flora and fauna of the Miechów Land are certainly worth trying.
